So... what do you want to do with the range finders?


Use them for motion detection, at the vex competition we can only use the products that are listed at vexlabs.com so placing a motin detector would be easier but not allowed. If we could use the reference of 3 to 8 range finders to detect motion with a distance equation we would be able to create an autonomous program that would make our robot act as a sumo bot and attack other robots at the beginning of each match.

Hmm. Very interesting. Here is my suggestion: Mount two ultrasonic range finders on rotating platforms-- either on a servo motor or on continuously rotating motors with shaft encoders. (You can go one full turn forwards and then one full turn back to avoid cable wrap-up.) That can give you stereo range-finding vision, sufficient to create an unambiguous 3D map of the world from your location. If it moves, go chase it.
