Then in what way is it working?

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in programming-- bad physical connection, bad parameters, bad software, bad fuse bytes, and so on. Can you give more specifics about your setup?

Ok so i think that the programer is working but it seems like it is either a bad conection, the avr is burnt out, or the fuses are mesd up. do you know a good test. i have a multimeter but not a scope.

Do you have an alternate AVR that you can test? That's the best test.

No but I will probably buy one.

Not to necro-bump, but I had issues programming my Larson Scanner when I put it (and the USBTinyISP) together. The scanner worked just fine, but it wasn't recognized by the computer.

Turned out that my batteries, while strong enough to light the LEDs, were not strong enough to give a reliable signal back to the USBTinyISP. Once I put fresh batteries in the pack, it programmed like a charm!

I only saw a vague reference to the battery issue when searching the web for hours upon hours, so I figured I'd post it as a response to this particular post for posterity's sake, and because it isn't clear as to whether or not a power supply has actually been used or tested for this particular issue.

Thanks for the update. It's a good reminder, and not something that I always think of: things *go wrong* when batteries are low.
