I want to make a remote controlled flashlight. I have seen it done on youtube, but using RF remotes. I want to use a IR remote (tv remote, cd player remote).

I took apart a cd player and I'm using the parts to send and receive the signal to wire up a basic circuit that turns the light on or off, but it doesn't work. I am using a simple IR receiver, led flashlight, and the cd player remote. could anyone point me into the right direction here??
