We've just added this forum to discuss the CandyFab 4000 and derivative projects.

Do you have some good ideas for future versions of CandyFab and other low-cost homebrew rapid prototyping and solid freeform fabrication machines? Good. Discuss.

Hey guys,

not sure if the idea has been mentionned before, but what about making the "print head" with an infrared heater? No air, no disturbing the sugar, etc. It could even lead to the possibility of using powder sugar for much higher resolution.

If you want to stay with the relatively low-res hot air gun, then a medium of finely granulated wax would be useful: instant lost-wax casting master to encapsulate & then add molten metal for a permanent part.

For finer resolution, how about using powdered sugar? Mix it with a flour or clay powder for structural integrity; the molten sugar just binds the other components.

Me, I just stumbled across an old HP Designjet 600 someone (some company) left by the dumpsters [man that monster is heavy!] If it passes testing, then I may attempt to convert it to STL use by filling the inkjet cart w/ water & go the powdered sugar binder route.
